We are a tiny profession, making this a rare opportunity to step away from Zoom burnout, put our phones away, and devote your full attention to collaborating with like-minded peers. Join us for an intimate, in-person workshop where we take copious notes for daily practice and actually master high-level evaluation tools together.

Emotional Disability (ED) is one of the most contentious, complicated, and misunderstood eligibility categories in special education. If you are a school psychologist or LEP looking for a deeper, highly objective understanding of ED evaluations, this workshop is designed for you.

Rather than focusing on surface-level criteria, this session dives straight into the clinical and psychometric mechanics of ED eligibility. Ellie shares with district evaluators ways to avoid IEEs by making sure that your assessment is comprehensive and relevant in the first place. Peaceful IEP Navigators™ (PINs) aims to elevate assessment standards through transparent, rigorous education.

What You'll Learn

  • Surveys & Test Batteries: What do test publisher manuals actually say about survey usage? Discover which surveys have been proven valid, how to determine if a tool is valid for your specific student, and how to strategically select your survey battery. (Hint: Drowning a child in more surveys isn't always better!)
  • The "Diagnostic Trio" ED/OHI/SLD: Learn just how challenging it is to differentiate between them and what that means for eligibility.
  • "But they are so great at school": Ensuring internalizing students aren't denied services due to a lack of observable behaviors.
  • Social Maladjustment: Learn federal definition (hint: there isn't one), why the psychologist who created the term hates it, and whether it can be used as an exclusionary factor.
Ellie is a Licensed Educational Psychologist (#3165), BCBA (#1-12-12327) and founder of SoCal IEE, a boutique private practice specializing in differential eligibility determinations, holistic FBAs, and complicated cases. Peaceful IEP Navigators™ was brought forth as a marriage between her two decades in special education (including six years as a SELPA Program Specialist and reluctant CALPADS operator) and her experience as a parent to neurodivergent children, one with Level 2 Autism and Stargardt disease. PIN aims to make the IEP process more transparent and less stressful for families through accessible education that allows all members of the IEP team to act as truly equal and informed members.
